Middletown Centre for Autism is a North–South educational initiative and was established in 2007 with funding provided by the Department of Education (DE), Northern Ireland and the Department of Education and Skills (DES), Ireland.
Based in Middletown, Co. Armagh the purpose of the centre is to support the promotion of excellence in the development and co-ordination of education services to children and young people with autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs).
The role of Special Needs Assistants (SNAs) should be considered when considering professional development related to SNAs. Information is an Appendix attached to Circular SP.ED 07/02 provides the most clearly defined role of the SNA. Duties are assigned by the Principal Teacher in accordance with Circular 10/76. These duties, which should be supervised either by the Principal or by a class teacher, involve tasks of a non-teaching nature such as:
Prefessional Development Relevant to Special Needs Assistants (SNAs)
This course will help develop a wide range of practical strategies and approaches that will enable the inclusion of a child with visual impairment in school. The course will focus on practical access to curricular areas as well as fostering the child’s independence and social and emotional needs. The course is supported by the SESS and there are no fees. It is approved by the Department of Education and Science and EPV days apply.
