This practical seminar is intended for resource and learning support teachers in mainstream post-primary schools. It aims to give teachers the knowledge and strategies to recognise who may require individual planning and the steps involved in creating an Individual Education Plan (IEP).

Expected Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Discuss recent legislation and publications pertaining to SEN
  • Explore the steps involved in creating an individual plan for a student
  • Devise target strategies and resources to support a student within the context of a sample individual plan

Course Overview / Content

  • Recent legislation and publication on inclusion will be explored to set the current context
  • The rationale of using IEPs will be explored
  • The actual process of creating an actual IEP will be explored and discussed
  • The pivotal steps and stages of producing an IEP will be identified
  • Devising targets and strategies to meet the students' needs will be explored in a practical fashion by the participants
  • Participants will review students' sample IEPs
  • Case studies to allow participants to construct an IEP

Information for Applicants

This course is open to

  • Teachers of students with SEN in a Post-Primary setting
  • Full-time Resource/Learning Support teachers who are currently working with student(s) with SEN

Participants will require permission from the Board of Management to attend. Typically, substitution for this seminar will only be allowed to subject teachers with primary responsibility for students with a special educational need and if it is deemed absolutely essential by the Principal. 
Typically substitution will only be allocated to non - substitute teachers
Payment  is not available to teachers in a substitute capacity
