Literacy, Numeracy and ASD [Primary]

Summary Description

The seminar is designed for Primary Teachers who are currently working with a child diagnosed as having ASD. It is advised that teachers attend an Introduction to ASD seminar prior to attending the Literacy, Numeracy and ASD Course. The Course explores the concepts of Literacy and Numeracy. It provides an overveiw of assessment and purposeful interventions for teaching and learning. It offers useful approaches and strategies to enable the development of literacy and numeracy skills for the students with ASD. Emphasis is placed upon the importance of developing play and social skills as a basis for teaching and learning. There will be time for reflection and discussion throughout the day.

Anticipated Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Develop an understanding of Literacy and Numeracy within the context of teaching and learning of students with ASD 
  • Explore the concepts of formal and informal assessment
  • Focus on relevant assessment tools for students with ASD
  • Understand strategies and interventions within the key areas of play and social skills
  • Understand strategies and interventions within the key areas of Literacy and Numeracy

  • Literacy, Language and Communication
  • Expressive and receptive language, reading and writing
  • Language of numeracy and development of numeracy skills
  • Assessment tools for play, social skills, literacy and numeracy
  • Focused and purposeful interventions - approaches and strategies for development of skills
  • Brief exploration of digital technology

Information for Applicants

Participants will require permission from the Board of Management to attend. Typically, substitution for this seminar will only be allowed to classroom teachers with primary responsibility for students with a special educational need and if it is deemed absolutely essential by the Principal. Typically substitution will only be allocated to non - substitute teachers. Payment  is not available to teachers in a substitute capacity
