This is a one day seminar suitable for Post-Primary teachers working with students with Autism. This course explores the concepts of literacy and numeracy and offers useful approaches and strategies for teaching and learning of students with Autism. It provides an overview of assessment and purposeful intervention in the key skills of being literate and being numerate, within a cross-curricular framework.

 

Participants should have already completed a seminar or course in working with pupils with Autism, prior to attending this course.

 

Anticipated Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Develop an understanding of literacy and numeracy within the context of teaching and learning of students with Autism

  • Explore the concepts of formal and informal assessment

  • Focus on relevant assessment tools for students with Autism

  • Understand strategies and interventions within the key areas of literacy and numeracy

 

Course Outline and Content

(Within the context of teaching and learning for students with Autism)

  • Literacy, language and communication

  • Expressive and receptive language, reading and writing

  • Language of numeracy and numeracy skills across the curriculum

  • Assessment tools for literacy, numeracy

  • Focused and purposeful interventions - creating a strategy toolbox

  • Development of skills in literacy, numeracy

  • Brief exploration of digital technology

 

Information for Applicants

The course is open to

  • Teachers working in classes for student(s) with Autism in a mainstream setting
  • Teachers in special schools who are currently working with student(s) with Autism
  • Full-time Special Education Teachers who are currently working with student(s) with Autism
  • Participants will require permission from the Board of Management to attend. Typically, substitution for this seminar will only be allowed to subject teachers with primary responsibility for students with a special educational need and if it is deemed absolutely essential by the Principal
  • Typically substitution will only be allocated to non - substitute teachers
  • Payment is not available to teachers in a substitute capacity
