Individualised Planning for Pupils with ASD (Primary and Post-Primary)

This one day seminar, for Primary and Post Primary teachers, provides an overview of individual educational planning with particular focus on planning for the pupil with ASD.

Expected Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Develop an understanding of the IEP as a work within the context of rationale, process and product
  • Focus on the challenges for pupils with ASD in relation to inclusion and accessing the curriculum
  • Explore the various stages of developing an IEP, beginning with gathering information and assessment
  •  Participate in workshops to  identify pupils’ strengths and needs, priority learning needs and targets
  • Discuss strategies for IEP implementation and IEP review in collaborative settings

Course Overview

The course will:

  • explore the IEP rationale,  process and product
  • outline the particular challenges experienced by pupils with ASD
  • focus on the unique learning style of the pupil with ASD
  • provide a framework for writing IEPs which includes the pupils’ strengths and needs, priority learning needs, learning targets and progress


Course content

The course has three parts:

Part 1

  • Why do we use IEPs and who are they for?
  • School Self Evaluation and the Literacy and Numeracy Strategy- relevant DES and NSCE publications and guidelines
  • The contents of an IEP
  • IEP as an ongoing process

Part 2

  • Background to ASD and challenges to the pupil
  • Writing the IEP
  • ASD- specific assessment and assessment for Literacy and Numeracy
  • Collaboration

Part 3

  • Stages for writing the IEP
  • Implementation and review
  • Transition IEPs

Workshops are provided throughout the day to enable discussion and collaboration.


Information for Applicants

This course is available  to Primary and Post Primary teachers who are:

  • Teachers working in units/classes for student(s) with ASD in a mainstream setting
  • Teachers in special schools who are currently working with student(s) with ASD
  • Full-time Resource/Learning Support teachers who are currently working with student(s) with ASD

Substitution will be provided for Class teachers if it is deemed essential by the Principal.

Registration:  8.45 AM
Start: 9.15 AM
Finish: 3.30 PM
