An Introduction to Autistic Spectrum Disorders (Primary)

The seminar is designed for Primary teachers who are currently working with a child with ASD. The seminar provides an understanding of ASD and how this affects the pupil’s ability to learn and develop social skills. It also focuses on assessment and strategies to enable inclusion and access to the curriculum.

Expected Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Develop an understanding of ASD and the challenges pupils with ASD can experience in mainstream classroom
  • Examine the unique learning styles of pupils with ASD
  • Discuss  assessment and practical strategies to enable the inclusion of pupils with ASD
  • Engage in the practice of planning for pupils with ASD
  • Explore methods to support pupils in acquiring social skills
  • Develop an understanding of approaches and strategies for eliminating challenging behaviour and developing adaptive behaviour.

Course Overview / Content


Overview

There are three parts to the course:

  1. Overview of ASD-Key Concepts and Guiding Principles
  2. Assessment for teaching and learning
  3. Strategies for purposeful intervention

Content:

The course encompasses

  • Overview of ASD and the challenges experienced by the pupil with ASD
  • Brief historical background, psychological theories and additional difficulties associated with ASD
  • Overview of assessments, IEPS and curriculum differentiation
  • Understanding challenging behaviour and strategies to develop adaptive skills
  • Strategies such as developing social skills, structuring the learning environment, work systems, using timetables and visual supports.

Information for Applicants

This one day seminar is available to Primary teachers who work with pupils with ASD. Substitution will be provided for Class teachers if it is deemed essential by the Principal.

Finish : 3.15 PM
