Supporting Children with Autism as they Transition through Education
This is a one day seminar suitable for Primary and Post-primary teachers working with students with ASD.
This seminar will examine why children experience difficulties when faced with a transition to Pre, Primary and Post- primary School. The importance and design of a planned transition and the role of the education professional in this process will be discussed along with ideas and suggestions as to how best to prepare not only the education setting but also the parents and child. Focus will also be given to preparing the student for the workforce and the time after school.
Expected Outcomes
Participants will:
- Understand why transitions are difficult for children with autism
- Understand that it is critical to plan and have a strategy around key transitions in the child’s day and in the child’s life
- Develop simple transition plans and supports around key areas
- Have an understanding of pressures inherent in Primary and Post-primary transitions
- Develop some ideas and strategies that will promote positive Primary and Post-primary transitions.

Information for Applicants
This one day course is open to
- Teachers working in units/classes for student(s) with ASD in a mainstream setting
- Teachers in special schools who are currently working with student(s) with ASD
- Full-time Resource/Learning Support teachers who are currently working with student(s) with ASD
- Mainstream class teachers working with student(s) with ASD
- Substitution will be provided for class teachers if deemed essential by the Principal.
