An Introduction to Autistic Spectrum Disorders (Post-Primary)

The seminar is designed for Post-primary teachers who are currently working with a pupil with ASD. The seminar provides an understanding of ASD and how this impacts the pupil’s ability to learn and develop social skills. It also focuses on assessment, and on strategies to enable inclusion and on accessing the curriculum.

Expected Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Develop an understanding of ASD and the challenges pupils with ASD can experience in schools
  • Examine the unique learning styles of pupils with ASD
  • Discuss  assessment and practical strategies to enable the inclusion of pupils with ASD
  • Engage in the practice of planning for pupils with ASD
  • Explore methods to support pupils in acquiring social and life skills
  • Develop an understanding of approaches & strategies for eliminating challenging behaviour and developing adaptive behaviours.

Overview

There are three parts to the course:

  1. Key Concepts and Guiding Principles
  2. Assessment and Evaluation
  3. Focused and Purposeful Interventions

Content:

The course encompasses

  • Overview of ASD and the challenges experienced by the pupil with ASD
  • Educational consequences of ASD
  • Positive practice within a whole school approach
  • Functions of Assessment and what to assess
  • Formal/informal/differentiated assessment
  • Understanding challenging behaviour and strategies to develop adaptive skills
  • Discussion of strategies for focused interventions

Information for Applicants

This one day seminar is available to Post- primary teachers who currently work with a pupil with ASD.

Substitution will be provided for class teachers if it is deemed essential by the Principal.

Registration:  8.45 AM
Start:  9.15 AM.
Finish:  3.30 PM
Refreshments and lunch will be provided.
