Course Overview

Three phases can be identified in the process of planning for the transition of students with special educational needs from primary to post-primary education and a strong emphasis is placed on these essential elements throughout the seminar:

Communication: On-going contact between the schools involved. Communication with the SENO and NEPS and planning how best to support the transition and help the school to prepare to meet the learning needs of students prior to their arrival in the school.
Consultation: To be informed as to what supports, resources, personnel, time etc. have been in place to date through reference to assessment reports, IEPs and other relevant documentation and hence guide planning for the future.
Consolidation: This involves co-ordination of relevant aspects of the school plan and the monitoring and development of that plan.

The seminar addresses the challenges for the student and puts forward strategies for the teacher in aiding the transition process.
