'Communication and Language: Supporting Pupils with Special Educational Needs (Primary)

Course Description

 This course is for teachers working with students that have an assessed language and communication need.

Expected Outcomes

 Participants will:

  • Gain essential information on the nature and impact of language and communication needs.
  • Develop a deeper understanding of language and communication.
  • Consider the challenges / difficulties that pupils with special educational needs encounter vis-à-vis the development of language and communication skills.
  • View assessment of language and communication as an integral part of the teaching and learning process.
  • Consider collaborative approaches to meeting the needs of pupils with language and communication difficulties.
  • Explore practical strategies to support pupils with language and communication needs access the curriculum.

Course Content

Overview of Language and Communication: Development of language and communication skills, language delay versus disorder, terminology associated with language and communication.

Outline of Challenges: Difficulties that pupils with special educational needs encounter vis-à-vis the development of language skills.

Assessment Practices / Workshop: Focused and relevant assessment to identify pupils’ instructional needs.

Learning and Teaching Strategies: Practical learning and teaching strategies and purposeful instructional strategies that directly address the areas of need revealed through assessment.

Resources: Websites and books; a display of classroom resources.

Information for Applicants

 Participants will require permission from the Board of Management to attend. Substitution will be provided for class teachers if it is deemed essential by the Principal. Refreshments and lunch will be provided.
