Teaching Writing to Deaf Learners: Approaches, Strategies and Resources

This one-day writing workshop presented by Dr. Connie Mayer, Associate Professor EdD, York University, Toronto, Canada is for teachers of student(s) who are deaf / hard of hearing and will focus on those aspects of the writing process that have proven to be most problematic for deaf students. 

Anticipated Outcomes

Participants will be enabled:

  • To describe a model of the writing process and learning to write
  • To implement this model across a range of ages, educational settings, communication approaches and abilities
  • To consider the particular challenges facing deaf writers
  • To identify strategies for addressing these challenges
  • To develop a set of resources

 

Course Outline and Content

This workshop will consider a model for developing writing programs for deaf learners across primary and post-primary levels (i.e. Writer’s Workshop), focussing on those aspects of the writing process that have proven to be most problematic for deaf students (e.g. revising). Examples from a wide range of deaf student writers will be used as the basis for the workshop. Practical strategies, approaches, and resources for teaching writing and planning programs from the primary years through to post-primary will also be presented and described.

Information for Applicants

Participants will require permission from the Board of Management to attend. Typically, substitution for this seminar will only be allowed to classroom teachers with primary responsibility for students with a special educational need and if it is deemed absolutely essential by the Principal.
