Course Information

A one day seminar for Primary Teachers (pilot) SESS in collaboration with CARA, will pilot this one day Inclusive Physical Education seminar, aimed at primary teachers working with pupils with SEN. A balance of theoretical approaches and practical activities will enhance teachers’ knowledge of inclusive PE.

Aims

  • Provide an understanding of inclusive PE and illustrate best practice for the classroom teacher
  • Identify and apply the ‘TREE’ model and the Inclusion Continuum as inclusive strategies
  • Identify and demonstrate the centrality of fundamental movement skills (FMS) for the physical development of all pupils with particular emphasis on pupils with SEN
  • Discuss and demonstrate the inclusion of all abilities through practical activities based on five of the six PE strands (Aquatics omitted)

Content

  • Identify and address the varying needs of pupils with a focus on increasing engagement within the PE class
  • Understand the Inclusion Continuum and apply the ‘TREE’ model to adapt PE activities for the inclusion of all pupils
  • Demonstrate how FMS are prevalent in all strands of the PE curriculum and highlight the importance of the development of these skills for pupils with SEN
  • Participate in mini-practicals demonstrating the various strands in PE, and discuss and demonstrate how pupils with different needs can be included

Information for Applicants

  • Teachers working in classes with pupils with SEN
  • Full-time Resource/Learning Support teachers currently working with pupils with SEN
  • Participants will require permission from the Board of Management to attend. Typically, substitution for this seminar will only be allowed to classroom teachers with primary responsibility for pupils with a special educational need and if it is deemed absolutely essential by the Principal
  • Typically substitution will only be allocated to non-substitute teachers
  • Payment is not available to teachers in a substitute capacity
  • Appropriate clothing and footwear are required for the practical sessions
