The aim of this course is to advise and support principals/deputy principals, particularly recently appointed principals/deputy principals (appointed 1-5 years), in relation to inclusive learning for students with special educational needs in post-primary schools and to locate the inclusive learning of students with SEN in the broader context of policy development in education.
This course compliments the SESS course 'Leading Inclusive Learning for Students with Special Educational Needs in Post-Primary Schools - Resource Teachers'. The courses are ideally taken together but can be taken as a standalone option.
Expected Outcomes
This course will:
- Provide principals/deptuty principals with an overview of current legislation and policy regarding the inclusion of students with special educational needs in mainstream post-primary schools
- Outline principals/deputy principals' responsibilities with specific reference to inclusive learning and proffer appropriate models of planning and organisation to address those responsibilities
- Examine appropriate structures and policies that can be put in place
- Detail various assessment methods and examine means to maximise the resources and supports available to schools
- Discuss means to enhance the quality of learning and teaching in relation to special education provision
- Explore current trends and priorities in relation to students with special educational needs
Course Overview
Session One: (9.00AM-11.00AM)
Session one will provide an overview of current legislation and policy regarding inclusive learning for students with special educational needs with a specific focus on the role of the principal/deputy principal.
Session Two: (11.15AM-1.00PM)
Session two will focus on how best to address the challenge of the inclusive learning of students with special educational needs through appropriate planning, organisation, resource allocation, policy making and models of support.
Lunch: 1.00PM-2.00PM
Session Three: (2.00PM-4.00PM)
Session three will place an emphasis on locating inclusive learning for students with special educational needs in the broader context of policy development in education. Means to enhance the quality of learning and teaching in relation to special education provision and details of resources and supports to address current priorities in post-primary schools will also be addressed.
