Supporting Well Being in Schools: Focus on Special Educational Needs (Primary/Post-primary)

This course is a joint presentation co-facilitated by Special Education Support Service (SESS) and National Education Psychological Service (NEPS). The seminar will explore the  Well Being Guidelines (Primary and Post-primary) in accordance with the continuum of support approach. It will focus on how schools can support students with identified or emerging mental health needs, with particular reference to students with SEN.  Participants will be provided with information on referral pathways and procedures. The role of the teacher in the promotion of well-being for all students will be explored.

Expected Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Be enabled to support implementation of the ‘Well Being’ Primary or Post-primary guidelines for mental health promotion in accordance with the NEPS Continuum of Support and the Health Promoting Schools Framework
  • Appreciate the importance of a positive school climate in the promotion of mental health
  • Understand the vulnerabilities of students with SEN, and their increased risk of developing mental health difficulties
  • Be aware of the risk and protective factors associated with well-being
  • Recognise the value of ‘one supportive adult’ in students’ lives.

 

Course Outline and Content

This 1 day professional development seminar will cover the following:

  • An exploration of the Well Being Guidelines for Mental Health Promotion (Primary and Post-primary):  This section will address the context and purpose of the guidelines
  • An overview of the vulnerabilities associated with SEN:   Awareness of risk of students with SEN developing mental health difficulties
  • Identifying supports and resources in schools:  This will address the role of the school and the teacher in the promotion of well-being for students, particularly those with SEN.  Referral pathways and procedures for schools will be discussed
  • Case studies and targeted interventions:  Workshop based activities
  • Post Primary:  Organisation and setting up of a student support team
  • Primary:  Developing a whole school approach to supporting positive mental health and well- being for students.

 

Information for Applicants

The course is aimed at Principals, Resource, Learning Support and Guidance Counsellors.

Primary and Post-primary participants will attend together for the morning session, breaking into separate groups for the afternoon.
