Teaching Young Children with ASD

Teaching Young Children with ASD (ages 3-6 years): A Social Developmental Approach

The Special Education Support Service is providing a one-day seminar on Teaching Young Children with ASD. The facilitator for this seminar is Mary McKenna of Scoil Mhuire, Ballyboden, Dublin 16. The seminar will run from 9am-3pm, with registration at 8.45am.

This seminar is an enjoyable and highly practical workshop. It illustrates simple yet innovative practice that develops the children’s social and emotional understanding, communication, and flexibility in thought and behaviour, which are the core areas of deficit in ASD. Videos will show examples of daily routines including ‘Semi’-Circle time; Story and Rhyme time; Gross Motor Group; Play; Music ; One-to-one work (both floor and desk-top) as experienced by children in Mary’s class. When learning is fun and intrinsically rewarding, then teaching can be too!

This workshop experience is especially relevant to teachers of young children with ASD (ages 3-6 years), in special classes, resource teaching and mainstream classes. However, it may be helpful to teachers of older children also.

This seminar is suitable for:

  • Teachers working in units/classes for students with ASDs in a mainstream setting
  • Teachers in special schools who are currently working with students with ASDs
  • Resource and learning support teachers who work with children with ASDs
  • Mainstream teachers who have a child with ASDs in the class
