Course Description

TEACCH® Autism Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill developed the intervention approach called Structured TEACCHing, an evidence - based strategy that is based on understanding the learning characteristics of individuals with Autism and the use of visual supports to promote meaning and independence.  .

 

Anticipated Outcomes

Participants will be introduced to:

  • Learning styles in Autism
  • Structured Teaching
  • Informal assessment of the student with Autism
  • Teaching communication skills to children with Autism
  • Social communication
  • Behaviour management 

 

Course Outline and Content

This course is provided by the National Council for Special Education (NCSE) in conjunction with Division TEACCH, University of North Carolina. The two - day TEACCH course provides excellent background knowledge on Autism.  The content covers a wide range of topics relevant to learning and teaching and to the development of the child with Autism.

 

Information for Applicants

The course is open to

  • Teachers working in classes for student(s) with Autism in a mainstream setting
  • Teachers in special schools who are currently working with student(s) with Autism
  • Full-time Special Education Teachers who are currently working with student(s) with Autism
  • Participants will require permission from the Board of Management to attend. Typically, substitution for this seminar will only be allowed to classroom teachers with primary responsibility for students with a special educational need and if it is deemed absolutely essential by the Principal
  • Typically substitution will only be allocated to non - substitute teachers
  • Payment is not available to teachers in a substitute capacity
