Course Description

The NCSE Support Service is presenting a one day seminar which will provide professional development in Co-Teaching for Special Education Teachers in mainstream Post Primary Schools.

 

Anticipated Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Understand the theory of and rationale for co-teaching

  • Examine configurations of co-teaching

  • Explore the impact of co-teaching on schools, teachers and students

  • Acquire the knowledge and skills to plan, deliver and evaluate co-teaching at a whole-school, subject department and classroom level

  • Defining co-teaching

  • Irish and international context and the justification of and rationale for co-teaching

  • Models of co-teaching

  • Benefits of co-teaching for students

  • The impact of co-teaching in schools at individual and institutional level

  • Exemplars of practice

  • Evaluation and planning tools for the implementation of co-teaching

  • Workshop on identifying configurations of co-teaching to meet student need

  • Devising a plan for action for participants

 

Information for Applicants

The course is open to

  • Teachers working with students with a special education need
  • Full-time Special Education Teachers who are currently working with student(s) with a special education need
  • Participants will require permission from the Board of Management to attend. Typically, substitution for this seminar will only be allowed to classroom teachers with primary responsibility for students with a special educational need and if it is deemed absolutely essential by the Principal
  • Typically substitution will only be allocated to non - substitute teachers
  • Payment is not available to teachers in a substitute capacity
